Guaranteed Market 365 Days a Year
Paramount among the membership benefits the St. Albans Cooperative Creamery, Inc. provides is a guaranteed market for the individual dairy farmer’s milk product. The Creamery carefully regulates the separation of milk to coincide with supply and demand fluctuations.
Yesterday’s farmer first had to both produce and market their milk; today’s farmers who take advantage of cooperative membership are relieved of the marketing responsibility and are able to concentrate on producing pure high-quality milk. Members are encouraged to maintain a stable production of milk year round although this is not always the case.
Involvement with National & Local Organizations
The St. Albans Cooperative Creamery, Inc. and its Board of Directors recognize that dairy policy is a national arena. To be a part of and to be informed of national dairy issues, the St. Albans CO-OP is a member of the National Milk Producers Federation and the Northeast Dairy Farmers Cooperatives. These two organizations keep the St. Albans CO-OP Board of Directors and Management abreast of national issues and allow for the CO-OP’s position on issues to be heard at the Federal level.
On a more local level, the CO-OP is a member of the Green Mountain Dairy Farmers Cooperative Federation. This federation monitors issues of interest to dairy farmers and cooperatives in the Vermont State Legislature.
The Cooperative and its dairy farmer members are represented on the Dairy Management Inc. through United Dairy Industry Association, and locally on the New England Dairy Promotion Board and the Vermont Dairy Promotion Council to direct and implement dairy promotion activities.
Working with Others
In 2003, St. Albans CO-OP became a member of the Dairy Farmers of America Cooperative. This membership provided strength and stability while allowing the cooperative to maintain its independence.
Through this membership in DFA, St. Albans Cooperative Creamery, Inc. has an ownership interest in Dairy Marketing Services. Dairy Marketing Services is a marketing agency that markets milk from the farm to fluid and dairy processors. The St. Albans Cooperative maintains its processing facilities in St. Albans, Vermont and has complete control of the processing and marketing of the processed product. These new relationships are of great benefit to the cooperative and its membership by providing access to more markets, strength in numbers when working on legislative issues and greater influence in the marketplace.
